Welcome to Breaking News, Breaking Trust

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! The theme of this site is “Breaking News, Breaking Trust”- exploring how the state of today’s media has shaped what we believe, who we trust, and how we engage politically. Over the past couple of years, the emergence of misinformation, “fake news” and biased coverage has affected democracy. Social media platforms, round-the-clock news stations, and even memes have the ability to influence our perceptions of political events, actors, and issues. The reason why I chose this theme is because I realize the speed at which misinformation spreads, and see the struggle people have in discerning what source to trust. Election reporting, political exploits, the media has a significant and disproportionate impact on how we make decisions as publics- sometimes engendering trust, and often times destroying it. Getting to know me :)

My name is Mariam Jimoh, I am a political science major with a minor in psychology. My ultimate goal is to become a criminal defense lawyer and to own my own law firm. I grew up in a single parent immigrant home, so I learned early on the significance of perseverance and hard work. Experiences growing up only enforced my own hopeless determination and inspired me to fight for those experiences, who deal with the oppressive, systemic opportunities. Recently I became increasingly invested in representing people of color, later realizing they continue to be significantly affected by widespread mass incarceration. My recent academic career has also amplified this passion. Especially my experience with schooling law and criminal law. Both Constitutional Law and Criminal Justice Policy demonstrated that systemic inequality is not an accident of coincidence, and incited me to be a part of the solve.
